On May 27, 1987, Nevada adopted the black opal as our state precious gemstone. The Virgin Valley is the only place in North America where such spectacular opals are found in significant quantities. Native Americans believed that if they gazed deeply into the fiery soul of the stone, they would have good luck.
Where do these precious stones come from? They are found in layers of clay formed when volcanic ash filled ancient lakes millions of years ago. Opals are fossilized bits and pieces of plants that have become âopalized.â It takes nearly 10 million years to form a fiery reddish black opal.
Famous for their size and shape our precious gemstone is our O.
Black Opalâitâs what we all know.
Many, many want them so.
